10th Workshop on Managing Data from Seismic Networks

20-26 August 2017
Council for Geosciences
Pretoria, South Africa

IRIS Data Services conducted the tenth workshop on Managing Data from Seismic Networks in August 2017. Financial support was provided by the US National Science Foundation, the South African Council for Geosciences, and IASPEI. The workshop took place at the Council for Geosciences facility in Pretoria, South Africa.

The 24 participants came from 14 countries other than South Africa (Algeria, Cameroon, D.R. Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe), and 7 local participants from the Council for Geosciences also participated in the workshop. The 6 lecturers came from Germany and the United States.

Topics included:

  • Introductions to IRIS and IRIS Data Services as well as
  • How the FDSN plays an important role in international seismological activities.
  • Site selection and station installation topics
  • An overview of the IRIS GSN
  • Quality Assurance systems and techniques and how networks can interact with the IRIS MUSTANG system
  • The creation of seismic station metadata
  • SeisComp3 seismic network management system
  • The ObsPy seismic analysis application
  • How networks can work with the IRIS DMC to share data from their networks with the global community as well as with their neighboring networks

Each network represented at the workshop also provided a network report that identified the current and future plans within each of their networks. These reports greatly enhanced the network to network coordination that will continue to improve the situration with African seismic networks.
