Depth Coverage Whole Mantle (25 to 2890 km)
Area Global (latitudes: -90°/90°, longitudes: -180°/180°)

Data Set Description 253 earthquakes in the moment-magnitude range 5.8 ≤ M w ≤ 7.0. The events were chosen to provide broad geographical coverage, including shallow (depth ≤ 50 km), intermediate (50 km > depth > 300 km), and deep (depth ≥ 300 km) events. Because we used relatively long-period data (>17 s) and events with magnitudes less than 7, we chose a Centroid Moment-Tensor (CMT) pointsource earthquake representation. We used four M w = 5.8 earthquakes from the East African Rift Valley and the Eastern US (the 2011 Virginia earthquake) to improve coverage, since higher-magnitude events are not observed in these regions. Initial CMT solutions were selected from the global CMT catalogue.
